Parsley, Sage, Rosemary...


I’ve not always been a gardener. I started gardening as a “mature adult” – and perhaps in part because of that, I am a bit of a “lazy gardener” as well as a “fair-weather gardener.” I love spending time in the garden – but I enjoy it most when the weather is warm, the sun is shining, and I have the time to spare. And perhaps in part because of that, I gravitated toward herb gardening early on in my garden explorations.

Herbs are forgiving. They do not demand our attention. Generally, they don’t require a lot of care. If we consider their preferences for soil and sunlight when we choose where to plant them, they will grow and produce and bloom – and they will be there for us when we want to enjoy them. They will be there when it’s time to add flavor to our food, or when it’s time prepare our herbal tea.

Herbs can truly delight our sense of smell. Not only can they add to our foods and beverages, they also add aromatic interest to our gardens and to our lives! A deep inhale, as I run my hands over the leaves of my favorite herbs – instant mood boost!

Herbs don’t require a lot of space. While it’s true that “a separate [garden] area set aside for herbs often becomes a special place for peace and enchantment” (L. Bremness), most herbs will grow just as happily in pots – on a balcony, on a sunny windowsill, or as an accent to a larger garden space.

We’ll focus on ten common and undemanding herbs to grow, and on the basics of how to cultivate and use them. You will have the opportunity to use your mind and your senses to explore parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme – as well as basil, chives, oregano, mint, lavender, and lemon balm!

You will will leave the workshop with inspiration, ideas, and new knowledge – along with handouts, herb samples, and an herb to plant at home!
